The homeowners of this 1954 Eagle Rock ranch wanted to transform their dated 95-square-foot master bathroom into a modern spa retreat. The existing bathroom had a tub/shower combo, pedestal sink, vinyl flooring, and no ventilation fan.
NP Line Design gutted the bathroom and delivered: curbless walk-in shower (4x5 feet) with linear drain and large-format porcelain tile, floating double vanity with quartz countertop and vessel sinks, Nuheat radiant floor heating under 12x24 porcelain tile, new Velux skylight bringing natural light (the bathroom had no exterior window), Toto Washlet bidet toilet, ENERGY STAR exhaust fan with humidity sensor, and all-LED lighting on dimmers with warm color temperature.
The bathroom had no exterior wall for window placement, making natural light a challenge. The existing ceiling was conventional drywall with roof trusses above — cutting for a skylight required modifying the truss framing, which is a structural change requiring engineering. The curbless shower required lowering the subfloor to create the slope-to-drain transition, but the joist bay was only 7.5 inches deep — barely enough for the drain assembly and slope.
NP Line Design engaged a structural engineer to design a truss modification for the skylight opening — two trusses were reinforced with LVL headers to carry the load around the 24x48-inch skylight opening. The Velux solar-powered skylight includes a built-in blind for light control. For the curbless shower, we used a low-profile Schluter Kerdi drain assembly (only 2.5 inches deep) combined with a pre-sloped foam shower tray, allowing the slope transition to fit within the shallow joist depth. The heated floor system was extended throughout the entire bathroom, not just the shower area, for consistent comfort. The project completed in 7 weeks.
